Abacos Itinerary
Nature and the weather can be unpredictable, so your flexibility is important. All swims are planned with safety at their heart, and your guides will adapt the plan day by day to ensure the best possible experience. Want to sit out part of a swim? Just let the guides know and hop back on the boat – no problem at all.
Arrival and acclimitisation
You are welcome to arrive any time after 3pm on Sunday. A SwimQuest representative will meet you at Great Guana Cay jetty when you arrive and take you to your guesthouse. You can settle into your room, and then meet your fellow guests and guides for an evening meal and your safety briefing.
Great Guana exploration
Scotland Cay
This morning we board the boats and head south towards Scotland Cay, attempting a beautiful 3km swim along the islands southern shoreline. We will find a beach for a packed lunch after which there will be time to let the food settle before a second swim – keep an eye out for rays an turtles!
Fowl Cays National Park
Today we head out for the day to visit Fowl Cays National Park, where we will complete two spectacular swims (approx. 4km divided into two swims), stopping for lunch in between. Established in 2009, Fowl Cays National Park is a small but incredibly rich marine environment, home to vibrant coral reefs, seagrass beds, rocky shores and sandy-bottom habitats. Accessible only by boat, the cays offer a wonderfully remote setting for swimming and exploring.
Hope Town and Elbow Cay
Today we take the boats across to Elbow Cay – the home of the iconic
- 120-foot, red-and-white-striped Elbow Reef Lighthouse – which remains the only active and manned lightstation in the world that has not been electrified; the lens is hand-wound by a keeper and fueled by kerosene. After a beautiful swim along the west of Elbow Cay, we swim into Hope Town for a chance to climb the lighthouse and soak in the beautiful views from the top. After lunch and an explore, we head out again, for our final swim of the day, weaving in and around the little spattering of cays to the north east of Elbow Reef.
No Name Cay and Green Turtle Cay
Our final day of exploring – today we head north towards No Name Cay – famous for its ‘swimming pigs’! After saying hello to the pigs, we will complete a bay swim in the milk-white Gillam Bay, after which we will motor back to Great Guana to enjoy our final swim along Great Guana’s home reef, before sundowners and our final meal together.
