Stephen (often referred to as ‘Bear’!) learnt to swim at 6 years old and within 2 years was swimming competitively at both a Club and Provincial level. He transitioned to open water swimming when at 21 years old – and long before this genre become popular and trendy.

He is a qualified IASA Swimming Teacher and Provisional Club Coach, and an STA qualified Open Water Swimming Coach. Over the last few years he has taken up marathon swimming such as the Thames Marathon, Ullswater, Coniston, Windermere and the English Channel, as well as ice swimming including an IISA ice mile.

I am often found in unheated lidos, rivers and lakes, however, the sea is where I love swimming most. I enjoy meeting new people and especially those who are passionate about open water swimming with all it’s peripheral ancillarisation … oh, and of course all the funny stories that inevitably happen when one mixes an adventurous spirit pitted with Mother Nature!
