ABOUT THE CHALLENGES
Outstandingly beautiful, remote and unspoilt, the Isles of Scilly are every open water swimmer's dream. Just off the coast of Cornwall, this special place boasts ice-white beaches, Caribbean-like blue waters and picture-perfect harbours and bays. Now in its 12th sell-out year, the Scilly Swim Challenges showcase some of the very best swimming the UK has to offer, offering participants the chance to swim and walk between these islands, safe in the knowledge they will be looked after by a team of open water experts. The combination of swimming in the cold sea with the backdrop of the beautiful islands & changing (often challenging) conditions, provides an incredible experience for people.
OUR APPROACH
The main focus of the Challenge events is on the swim journey as a group in varied open water conditions. Emphasis is placed on the challenge aspect (i.e. NOT a race), getting everyone around the course with expert safety cover in place.ESSENTIAL INFORMATION:
- Wetsuits and skins welcome (though please be aware you will be swimming in groups and may have to wait for others at times)
- Sea temperature 14-16 degrees
- It is important that you are able to maintain our minimum swim speed of 28 minutes / km to ensure we can keep groups together safely and complete the course taking into account tides. For other ways of measuring your swim speed, and to look at our pod pacing, click here.
- Walking between islands is necessary on the one day and two day events (range from 600m to 2km)
- Entrants will be divided into three speed groups (green - leisurely, orange - moderate, red - fast - click here for pod pacing)
- Tow floats will be required for the events. You can bring your own bright tow float or you can order an event tow float when you book your event place.
- 2 day challenge : Longest swim 6km / Shortest swim 600m
- Tresco 360 challenge : 3 swims of 2 to 4 km
- Maximum participants on the day 150
- Spectators welcome (see Spectator tab for details)
- A race finisher goody bag is included in the entry fee (what is it? It’s a surprise!)
HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE
The Scilly Swim Challenge started in 2014, and was set up by Dewi Winkle (a Yorkshireman), Nick and Bryony Lishman (Scilly natives / Scillonians). SwimQuest have known and worked with Nick and Dewi for many years - with John, Nick and Dewi working together on some of the first swimming holidays in Scilly, back in 2007.The Scilly Swim Challenge has now become part of SwimQuest’s family of swimming events and holidays. After a 11th sell-out year, both SwimQuest and the team on Scilly are incredibly excited to welcome swimmers again in 2024.
We can’t wait to swim with you.2-DAY EVENT ITINERARY

It has to be said the rest of the world is a bit far from the Isles of Scilly….. but we’re confident it will be worth the travel. Here are some tips to help you plan your visit. When to come
FOR THE 1-DAY EVENT, YOU NEED TO BE ON ST MARY’S iN SCILLY FROM FRIDAY 13th - MONDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2024.
On Friday 13th in the afternoon we will have the 1-Day registration and mandatory swim briefing. You will need to stay on St Mary's until Monday 16th September, as if the weather is bad on Saturday 14th, the event will be deferred to Sunday 15th and there are no flights out on Sunday. Staying until Monday gives a greater weather window for the event, and we will have the party on the Sunday evening.FOR OUR 2-DAY EVENT, YOU WILL NEED TO BE ON ST MARY’S ISLAND IN SCILLY FROM SATURDAY 7th – tuesday 10th SEPTEMBER 2024.
On Saturday 7th September in the afternoon we have the 2-Day registration and mandatory swim briefing. You will also need to stay on until Tuesday 10th September as the event may finish later than scheduled due to weather. There will be a party on Monday evening too!So three nights it is... or longer (!) why not add a few days and make a whole week of it, or stay on until Thursday 12th and take part in the brand-new Tresco 360 event on Wednesday 11th too?!
FOR the tresco360 EVENT, YOU WILL NEED TO BE ON ST MARY’S ISLAND IN SCILLY FROM TUESDAY 10Th to thursday 12th sepTEMBER 2024.
On Tuesday 10th September in the afternoon we have the Tresco 360 registration and mandatory swim briefing. You will also need to stay on until Thursday 12th September as the event will finish too late on the 11th to get off the island.getTING There
Three options:
- The Scillonian III ferry -the cheapest and most reliable option, but slower. This can be a wonderful way to arrive on the islands, however to enable maximum enjoyment of the journey we recommend using Kwells/Stugeron if you are prone to motion sickness, as it can be a bit queasy-inducing in rough weather! Leaves Penzance at 9.15am every morning and from St. Mary’s at 4.30pm. (https://www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk)
- Skybus fixed wing aircraft - more expensive but quicker and more departure points and times (Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter). Can be affected by poor visibility or crosswinds. (https://www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk)
- Helicopter - new service since 2020. Quick and reliable but more expensive. Flies from Penzance to St. Mary’s & Tresco (https://penzancehelicopters.co.uk)
...DON’T FORGET! IOS 10% PASSENGER TRAVEL DISCOUNT
If you are booking ferry or plane tickets from Land's End (only), take advantage of our SSC attendees 10% discount on passenger travel applicable for travel between 02/09/24 and 20/09/24.Customers can either book using the code SWSC24 online at www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk or alternatively, via the Travel Centre over the phone, quoting SWSC24 at the start of the call (01736 334220 option 1 sales)
If using the discount online, input the code into the promotional code field on the home screen before starting to book.
TRAIN
One good option which isn’t well known is the sleeper train from London to Penzance which links up with the ferry. https://www.gwr.com/plan-journey/journey-information/on-board/night-riviera-sleeperTRAVEL INSURANCE
Whilst you should not expect any issues with travel, we highly recommend travel insurance! Being an island on the edge of the Atlantic, the weather can be very changeable and sometimes travel is affected.Where to stay: ST MARY'S
However gorgeous the off-islands are (that’s the smaller ones excluding the main island of St. Mary’s) you’ll find it far more convenient to stay on St. Mary’s where our events are based. If you do want to stay on an off-island you may have to arrange a water-taxi to get you back after the acclimatisation swim and event day as we anticipate finishing after the last scheduled boats. This can be quite expensive. Staying near to Hugh Town can be more convenient, but wherever you stay on St Mary’s you’re never more than about 2km from the event base. For the Tresco 360 event, you are very welcome to stay on Tresco however we will be running boats to and from St Mary's for this event at the start and finish of the day - as most people will be based on St Mary's.When do I need to book?
SOON!
Scilly gets booked up a long time in advance so it’s worth looking at as soon as you’ve got your place on the swim. Some people have been booking up even before we launched and finding it hard to get somewhere. Please ask us about wetsuit hire, or make the most of our Zone3 15% discount code (enter SCILLYSWIM15 when purchasing via the Zone3 website). What Marine Life Exists In The Waters Around THE Isles OF SCILLY? I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION. CAN I STILL ENTER?
DO I HAVE TO BE THERE FOR THE REGISTRATION AND THE ACCLIMITIsATION SWIM?
WHERE SHOULD I STAY?
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?
DO I HAVE TO SIGN A WAIVER?
There's a waiver to read and acknowledge during the registration process as follows... "The Scilly Swim Challenge will involve sea swimming and walking over designated routes decided by the Event Organisers. Whilst the utmost care is placed upon the safety of all swimmers, officials, supporters, bystanders and helpers, entrants undertake the event at their own risk. Sea swimming carries a level of risk that whilst reduced by the safe planning of the event can not be entirely mitigated due to the nature of wild swimming. The event organisers have the authority to cancel, postpone or change the planned route to ensure the safety of swimmers and all involved. Individuals who in the opinion of the event directors or safety marshals are either at risk or putting others at risk during the event will be removed from the event. By entering the event you confirm that you can swim a mile in less than 35mins [One Day] / 35-40mins [Two Day & Tresco 360], have experience of open water sea swimming and agree to abide by the guidelines imposed by the event organisers."CAN I WEAR FINS, HAND PADDLES, ETC?
You may wear swimming aids, with the exception of hand paddles, if this helps you stay with the group. Please remember however that you will be swimming with other people so be very careful you don't bash them with a fin!CAN I LEAVE THE ISLANDS ON THE DAY OF THE SWIM?
Please see the details for each event. Travel to and from Scilly is limited or impossible on Sundays. The one day events have a contingency day so if you plan to leave on event day and we have to change days you would miss the event entirely. Also we may have to alter schedules as we go so cannot guarantee to get you back to St. Mary's by a certain time.MY FRIEND / PARTNER WANTS TO WATCH. IS THERE A SPECTATOR BOAT?
Yes. There will be a spectator boat which follows all of the swims for the one and two day events. The spectators will be able to get ashore and follow most of the walks. For Tresco 360, Spectators can follow a coastal path but there will be no spectator boat. Tickets for the Spectator Boats can be purchased at registration on St. Mary’s.Do we swim in one group?
Swimmers will be divided into waves or "pods" of about 50 each according to swim speed. The fastest (Red) pod leaves first, shortly followed by the Amber pod and then the Green pod.Do We Have To Stay With A Group?
You will be asked to stay behind a lead kayak and not drop behind the rear kayak in your group.WHY IS THERE A MAXIMUM SWIM TIME PER MILE?
To make sure we can complete the course in the time we do have a fairly strict timetable to keep to. Swimmers are divided into pods according to their speed. For everyone's safety these pods have to be kept together as a group. If you can't keep up with your pod you will be give the chance of a "piggy-back" in one of the safety boats or to drop back to a slower pod (if available).WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT?
We will advise you of clothing/warm kit and footwear to wear on the islands as you move to the next swim. All kit will be moved by a logistical team so it is there waiting your arrival. All warm kit/shoes will be dropped off prior to each swim.Is there An Alternative To Walking At The End Of A Swim To The Next Swim?
No, everyone will re-group after the swim, be given a chance to have some food and drink (we will send out a ‘what to pack’ email nearer the time) and then move together to the next swim before repeating the process. The walks connecting each swim are on a combination of sand, trail and tarmac and you will need footwear though there are no steep gradients or overgrown areas.IS THIS A RACE? ARE THERE PRIZES?
No, these are friendly challenge events with the focus being to try and get everyone around in a controlled and safe way. We may surprise you with some on the day prizes!WHAT IF I CAN’T COMPLETE THE DISTANCE?
You can always get out of the water and onto safety boat. We will have medical and support staff to look after everyone and advisors to get you back to St Marys (if staying there).TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
By submitting your online application and paying your fee you are agreeing to enter the event and also agree to abide by these Conditions of Entry and any instructions given to you by the organisers and officials of the Event. This also includes any entries made for you on your behalf by a third party.A. THE EVENT(S)
The SwimQuest Scilly Swim Challenge events will involve sea swimming and walking over designated routes decided by the event organisers. Whilst the utmost care is placed upon the safety of all swimmers, officials, supporters, bystanders and helpers, entrants undertake the event at their own risk. Sea swimming carries a level of risk that whilst reduced by the safe planning of the event cannot be entirely mitigated due to the nature of wild swimming. The event organisers have the authority to cancel, postpone or change the planned route to ensure the safety of swimmers and all involved. Individuals who in the opinion of the event directors or safety marshals are either at risk or putting others at risk during the event will be removed from the event. By entering the event you confirm that you can swim a mile in less than 35mins (One-Day) 35-40mins (Two-Day & Tresco 360), have experience of open water swimming and agree to abide by the guidelines imposed by the event organisers. If you are in any doubt please consult your doctor.B. CANCELLATION BY YOU
If you are not able to come to the event and wish to cancel, we will refund 50% of the fee up to four months before the event. After that, no refunds or deferrals are available. You are however able to substitute swimmers by logging onto the website and changing the personal details on the booking up to 7 days before the event.TAKE OUT YOUR OWN INSURANCE COVER
We realise that sometimes life gets in the way, whether it’s work, an injury or a family wedding – so we strongly encourage you to take out insurance to cover any costs incurred by you such as event fees, travel and accommodation. Your insurance must cover escorted open water swimming and there are a number of companies offering this type of cover.C. CANCELLATION BY US
We may cancel an event if circumstances beyond our reasonable control arise, including, without limitation, force majeure or act of God, war, civil or political unrest, terrorism, travel restrictions, or inclement / unsafe weather conditions. In such circumstance:-- we will endeavour to stage the event at a later date ( i.e. postpone the event), although restrictions to the course and sea conditions may mean this is not possible. Any change to the event will be communicated to you at the event or as soon as practicable;
- you will have the right to take part in the postponed event. If you cannot make the new date you will be offered a deferral to the following year, or you can cancel your place and receive a partial refund as stipulated in clause
- in the event of cancellation or postponement of the event we will have no responsibility for any costs incurred as a result of cancellation including any travel or accommodation costs, including your travel to the event location.
- If due to Covid-19 or any other reason beyond our control we are forced to CANCEL the event 90 days or more before the event date, we will offer:
- a 100% refund less a £15 administration fee OR
- a deferral to the following year or later date
- If due to Covid-19 or any other reason beyond our control we are forced to CANCEL an event 90 days or less before the event date, we will offer a reimbursement of the part of the entry fees (or a credit note to the equivalent value) which are recoverable or have not been irrevocably committed to staging the event. This is purely at our discretion and we are not required to provide any supporting evidence. By way of example, if we have to cancel immediately before the event due to weather, a refund or deferral is unlikely as the majority of event expenses will have been incurred and SwimQuest reserves the right not to refund any of your entry fee in these circumstances.
D. LIMITATION OF OUR LIABILITY TO YOU
- We will not be liable where any failure in the performance of the contract is due to: you; or a third party unconnected with the provision of the event arrangements and where the failure is unforeseeable or unavoidable; or unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised; or an event which we or our suppliers, even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall.
- Our liability, except in cases involving death or personal injury, shall be limited to a maximum of 2 times the cost payable to us for your event.
- Should you or any member of your party suffer illness, personal injury or death attributable to a third party unconnected with the provision of our services, or as a result of failures due to circumstances beyond our control, we will offer you such advice, guidance and assistance as is reasonable in the circumstances.
- Our liability will also be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to:-
- any relevant international convention, which limit the amount of compensation that you can claim for death, injury, delay to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage which are incorporated into and form part of your contract with us and we are to be regarded as having all the benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any other such conventions.
- Unless otherwise expressly indicated by us in writing, excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are participating in this event are not part of the arrangements provided by us. For any excursion or other tour that you book, your contract will be with the operator of the excursion or tour and not with us. We are not responsible for the provision of the excursion or tour or for anything that happens during the course of its provision by the operator.
E. SPECIAL REQUESTS
If you have a special request, we will do our best to help, but we cannot guarantee it. Please advise us of your request at the time of booking and make sure that we are given as much detail as possible. If your special request is vital to your trip, it must be specifically agreed with us before you choose to enter the event. General confirmation that a special request has been noted or passed on to the supplier or the inclusion of a special request on your Confirmation Invoice or on the acknowledgement of your booking or any other documentation is not confirmation that the request will be met. Unless and until specifically confirmed in writing all special requests are subject to availability. If any additional cost is applicable, it will either be invoiced to you prior to the event or should be paid for locally.F. YOUR DOCUMENTATION
- You are responsible for ensuring that you and all other persons you are travelling with satisfy all passport, visa, travel insurance and health certificate requirements and we accept no responsibility for any refusal of travel or entry into any destination or for any liabilities, losses, delays or expenses incurred through any irregularity in such documentation. In particular many countries require that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of travel. If you have any queries with regard to documentation and insurance requirements you must raise them with us well in advance of travel commencing.
- You are responsible for ensuring that all details passed to us for you and all members of your party for the purposes of your booking and documentation generally are complete and accurate. If information that you supply to us is inaccurate then you may not be allowed to take part in the event and you will not be entitled to any compensation.
- We will send out final details of the event a few weeks before the start date. Please ensure that you contact us if you have not received a final itinerary and other necessary documentation 7 days before the event date(s).
G. HEALTH & FITNESS PRECAUTIONS
- All of our events and trips require a certain degree of physical fitness and, in some cases, experience of open water swimming. Whilst we endeavour to give guidance as to the likely levels of fitness and experience required, it is only guidance and it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the levels of fitness and experience required for any particular event. By entering the event you confirm that you can swim a mile in less than 35mins (One Day) 35-40mins (Two Day & Tresco 360), have experience of open water swimming and agree to abide by the guidelines imposed by the event organisers. If you are in any doubt please consult your doctor. We, and those retained by us to supervise any event, have an absolute right at any time (even just before or during the event) to prevent you from undertaking any particular part of the event or the whole event if we reasonably believe that you do not possess the necessary levels of fitness and experience. In such circumstances we shall not be liable for any losses or compensation arising.
- You must provide us with full details of any existing medical or physical problem (including unusual height or weight) or disability that may apply to you or any member of your group and which affect your arrangements (including, in particular, any accommodation requirements or difficulties that may be encountered in accessing buildings) at the time of booking. If in our reasonable opinion, your chosen arrangements are not suitable for the medical or physical problem or disability or you are not travelling with someone who can provide all assistance that may be required, we have the right to refuse to accept the booking or you may not be able to participate in certain parts of the event(s), in which event we shall not be liable for any losses or compensation arising.
- If you do not give us full details of any medical or physical problem or disability at the time of booking and/or promptly inform us of any adverse change to or a new medical or physical problem or disability that arises after booking, then we can also cancel the booking when we find out the full details if in our reasonable opinion the arrangements are not suitable in the circumstances. If we cancel in this situation, cancellation charges as set out in our Cancellation Clause must be paid by the person concerned.
- We will need full details from you of any illness, medication currently being taken, known medical conditions and allergies. This information must be supplied at the time of entry via email to info@swimquest.uk.com. This information is required purely to assist in the case of an emergency and will otherwise be kept strictly confidential.
H. INSURANCE
We consider comprehensive travel insurance to be essential and you must have such insurance to cover areas in particular, illness, accident, emergency repatriation, cancellation, lost luggage, delays and must cover you for open water swimming. Travel insurance is widely available and insurance providers will have a policy available for you to purchase. Please read your policy details carefully and take them away with you. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance cover you purchase is suitable and adequate for your particular needs.i. BEHAVIOUR
You must be responsible for the behaviour of yourself and your party. In particular we require that all our customers abide by any event rules or other codes of conduct (which will be forwarded to you with your Confirmation Invoice or, if not, prior to the event commencing) and any other regulations that we may reasonably have in force in respect of the event in question and all instructions given by those supervising any event. We can refuse to accept you as a customer or refuse to continue dealing with you and/or any other member of your group by terminating your event entry if behaviour is or is likely to be, in our reasonable opinion, or in the reasonable opinion of any our suppliers, or other person in authority, disruptive, upsetting or dangerous to yourself or anyone else. We will not pay any refund, compensation or other sum whatsoever or any costs or expenses incurred by you if we have to terminate your trip due to such unacceptable behaviour or any failure to follow regulations or instructions. In this situation we will then have no further responsibility for you or any other member of your party.J. GETTING TO THE START POINT

Only information necessary for this purpose will be disclosed to them. Some information, for example relating to your religion or health, may be “sensitive personal data” within the meaning of the Data Protection Act 1998. We need this information to cater for your needs, but it is collected on condition that we have your positive consent. If you do not agree to our use of your information, we cannot accept your booking. By making a booking with us, you agree to allow your insurers, their agents and medical staff to disclose relevant information to us in circumstances where we may need to act in the interests of you or anyone else in the group. Please write to us if you would prefer that we do not use any such photographs or comments.M. JURISDICTION/GOVERNING LAW
We both agree that any dispute, claim or other matter of any description (and whether involving personal injury or not) which arises out of or in connection with your booking or travel must be brought in the Courts of England and Wales only (unless you are a resident of Scotland or Northern Ireland in which case any proceedings must be brought in either the Courts of your own country or those of England and Wales). We both also agree that English law (and no other) will apply to your contract (unless proceedings are brought in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in which case Scottish or Northern Irish law, as applicable, will apply instead). If this provision is not acceptable to you, you must tell us at the time of booking.N. COMMUNICATION
Generally much of our communication with you is by email and this applies particularly in respect of confirmations or event instructions and changes and subsequent information that needs to be sent to you. It is you responsibility to retain copies of all communications that you receive from us electronically relating to your trip and contact us if you have not received information prior to the event date. We cannot be responsible for any losses arising from a failure by you to receive email communications on account of technical problems, traffic congestion on the Internet or on any Website, problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer equipment, software, systems, servers or providers.WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:
Please remember that we do not provide food on this challenge, so you will need to ensure you are self sufficient with snacks and sandwiches! Your bag will be made available to you, delivered by the Dryrobe baggage boat at the start of each swim.- A Dry Bag (30 litres is usually a good size and will keep your kit dry during boat transfers). Try to pack all of your belongings into this bag - do not leave flipflops etc hanging off / tied on as they may get lost.
- Wetsuit (if you are wearing one - if not, please be certain you are happy swimming event distance in Scilly temperatures!)
- A tow float. These will be required on the swims. You can bring your own bright tow float or you can order an event tow float when you book your event ticket - these can be sent to you or ready to pick up at registration
- A drinks bottle (750ml). Water is available at the feed stops for top ups
- A small flask of hot tea - it’s useful to have something warm with you for when you need it! There will be some tea stops on route, but often swimmers like to have their own for when they are feeling the cold!
- Energy Bars, granola bars, jelly babies, bananas, snacks - or whatever you like to eat whilst swimming. Don’t get hungry at any point; eat before you do.
- Sandwiches / packed lunch
- Beanie, buff, and gloves for warming up
- Base layer (wicking if you can get it)
- Fleece layer
- Lightweight puffa jacket
- Some form of rain protection
- Trainers
- 5 pairs liner socks, or 1 x pair wetsuit socks. (Most swimmers tend to do the walks with the top of their suit pulled down, so your socks will get wet while you're walking.)
- Glide or vaseline to prevent / stop chafing, whether or not you are wearing a wetsuit - we would recommend applying vaseline under the arms, behind the neck and anywhere else you usually chafe in the sea
- 2 x pairs goggles
- Goggle de-mister if you like to use one
- Lightweight travel towel
- Small amount of cash
- Spare swim hat
- Ear plugs and spares (if you use them)
